Lajos Kertesz


Lajos Kertész was born in Gyula in 1925 and was a pupil of Lajos Galánffy and Emil Szabó, while studying at the University of Debrecen. He received his artist teacher diploma in 1954 at the Ferenc Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, where his teachers were Zoltán Kodály, István Antal, Pál Járdányi, Ede Banda, Dénes Bartha and Bence Szabolcsi. He made his début in July 1954 in the Great Hall of the Music Academy, performing Liszt’s Totentanz (Dance of Death), with the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Viktor Vaszy. He started his career on the staff of the Béla Bartók Conservatory in Budapest, where he served as head of department. He subsequently taught at the Teacher Training Institute of the Ferenc Lizt Music Academy. He also gave concerts abroad in Japan, Austria, Germany and Switzerland. His performances of works by Bartók, Kodály and Liszt were recorded by Hungaroton, and his career as a performer and as a teacher brought a number of important awards.
