Andreas Rothkopf

Andreas Rothkopf was born at Dillingen in the Saar in 1955 and had his first piano lessons from his father at the age of five. He started to learn the organ in 1965. After a long period of piano study with Karl Gottfried, he entered the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Saarbrücken, where he studied church music and music education and was an organ pupil of Paul Schneider and a piano pupil of Robert Leonardy. This was followed by three years at the Cologne Musikhochschule in the master classes of Michael Schneider for organ and Günter Ludwig for piano, with conducting studies under Volker Wangenheim. An award from the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes allowed him to conclude his studies with Marie-Claire Alain in Paris. After three years teaching at the Cologne Musikhochschule, he returned to the Saarbrücken Hochschule as Professor of Organ. His first prizes in various competitions include awards in the 1979 Bonn Music Competition, the 1981 International Organ Competition in Speyer and the 1983 International Franz-Liszt Competition in Budapest. Andreas Rothkopf enjoys a busy international career as an organist and pianist, with performances throughout Europe, in Israel and in Japan. His recordings include releases of organ music by Schumann and by Max Reger.
