Abdel Rahman El Bacha

In June 1978 at the age of nineteen, Abdel Rahman El Bacha won the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Competition by a unanimous judgement, and was also awarded the Audience Prize. Born in Beirut in October 1958 into a family of musicians, he started to study the piano in 1967 with Zvart Sarkissian, a pupil of Marguerite Long and Jacques Février. He entered the Paris Conservatoire in the class of Pierre Sancan, and left with four first prizes (piano, chamber music, harmony and counterpoint). From this period the musical press started to compare him with the greatest, laying emphasis on the mastery, the limpidity, the virtuosity and the serenity of his playing, going to the very core of emotion. From the Mozarteum in Salzburg to the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, from the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam to the Herkulessaal in Munich, he today performs all over Europe, in Japan, the Middle East and in the United States. His vast repertory, which includes over fifty concertos, is based mainly on the works of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Schubert, Schumann, Rachmaninov, Ravel and Prokofiev. In 1983 his first record, devoted to the early works of Prokofiev, won the Grand Prix of the Académie Charles Cros, presented by the composer’s widow. His recording of the complete numbered piano sonatas of Beethoven, like his concert performances have been heralded by the press as major events. Abdel Rahman El Bacha is also a composer. Since 1981 he has had Franco-Lebanese dual nationality.
