Wu Xiao-zhong, guanzi
Wu Xiao-zhong began his musical training as a pianist and violinist at the age of five and became a student of Chinese music at the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing at the age of thirteen. In 1973 he was appointed guanzi virtuoso with the Shaanxi Song and Dance Troupe in China and in 1981 completed a tour of nineteen cities in Japan, where his performance of Farewell at Yangguan won an audience popularity poll. The following year he won first prize in China at the First National Solo Competition for traditional instruments. Four years later he joined the Chinese Musicians Ensemble, performing in Japan, Korea, France, Spain and Portugal, thereafter undertaking further musical study at the Tokyo Arts University. In 1990 Wu Xiao-zhong joined the People's Association Chinese Orchestra.
