Born in Manresa in Catalonia, Assumpta Mateu studied violin and singing (opera) in Barcelona, followed by advanced voice studies at the Hochschule Mozarteum in Salzburg where she specialised in Lied with Mitsuko Shirai and Hartmut Höll. She has won many international singing competitions. Active in the worlds of Lied, opera and oratorio, she has performed leading rôles in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, Don Giovanni, Der Schauspieldirektor, Haydn’s Lo speziale, L’elisir d’amore, Don Pasquale, La Bohème, Die Fledermaus, and Toldrà’s El Giravolt de Maig. In oratorio her work has covered the whole range from Vivaldi, Bach, Händel, Mozart, Haydn to Honegger and Strawinsky. Forming part of a Lieder duo with the pianist Francisco Poyato, she has given recitals in Spain, Austria, Germany, Holland and Portugal, and has appeared as a soloist with orchestras throughout Europe and in South America. She is singing and Lied professor at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya.
