David Braynard studied the tuba with Bill Barber, Herb Wekselblatt and Toby Hanks at the Manhattan School of Music. He served as freelance tubaist / bassist in the American Ballet Theatre Orchestra (Principal Tuba since 1982), Met Opera Orchestra, NYC Opera Orchestra, Riverside Symphony, Parnassus Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, American Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra of New York, Orchestra of St. Luke's and the New York Yankees Dixieland Band. He has collaborated on Stravinsky recordings conducted by Robert Craft, The Group for Contemporary Music recording of Wuorinen's Chamber Concerto for Tuba. He has recorded works by Wuorinen, notably The Winds, Babbitt, Davidovsky, and Carter with Parnassus and Riverside Symphony, and performed Wuorinen's Prelude to Kullervo for tuba and orchestra with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra and Rutgers Symphony. He is also active in jazz and pop fields doubling on electric and string bass as well as tuba and performing on many jingles and records. As a composer he has written songs and underscoring music for a production of Alice in Wonderland for the Manhattan Theatre Company. He is on the faculty of Brooklyn College and Columbia University.
