Giorgio Surian was born in Rijeka (Croatia). After his musical studies he attended the specialization courses of the Teatro alla Scala. Since his début in Ernani in 1982, he has often taken part in La Scala’s seasons and tours. He has also appeared on other leading stages, including the Opéra National de Paris, Covent Garden, Metropolitan Opera in New York, Wiener Staatsoper, Opéra de Lyon, Liceu de Barcelona, Opernhaus in Zürich, Teatro Comunale in Florence, Teatro Massimo in Palermo, Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Arena di Verona, and the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. He is also a frequent participant in important festivals, including the Pesaro Rossini Opera Festival, Ravenna Festival and Salzburg Festival. Giorgio Surian’s repertory ranges from the baroque to the twentieth century, with a predilection for bel canto rôles. His remarkable vocal extension has enabled him also to undertake several baritone parts.
