Hans Jorg Mammel

The tenor Hans Jörg Mammel studied at the Freiberg Musikhochschule, and in master-classes with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and James Wagner, with Reinhard Goebel for historical performance practice. He has since made a name for himself in the concert hall and in opera in Germany and abroad. He has appeared at important festivals and with distinguished conductors, including Thomas Hengelbrock, Sigiswald Kuijken, Ivan Fischer, Hans Zender, Philipp Herreweghe and Ivor Bolton. As a teacher he gave master-classes at the Antwerp 2006 Bach Academy under the artistic direction of Philipp Herreweghe.

In Lieder he has a special interest in composers of the second Berlin Lieder School, in addition to the core romantic repertoire. In recitals he has presented songs by composers including Carl Friedrich Zelter, Johann Friedrich Reichardt, Johann Abraham, Peter Schulz and Robert Franz, many of whose songs he has recorded. His recording of Die schöne Müllerin in a version for tenor and guitar aroused great interest, followed in 2006 by his recording of Winterreise.
