Antonio Scotti (1866 - 1936)

Scotti studied singing in Naples with Ester Trifari-Paganini (niece of the violinist Niccolò Paganini) and Vincenzo Lombardi. Sources are divided as to his first professional appearance, which is variously given as a concert in Naples in 1888, at the Circolo Filarmonico, Naples as Cinna / La vestale in 1889 and as Amonasro / Aida in Malta, also in 1889. All three are possibilities. He began to establish himself quite quickly in Italy, with appearances in Milan (Teatro Manzoni, 1890) and Rome (Teatro Adriano, 1891).

During the final decade of the nineteenth century Scotti sang in Spain (Teatro Real, Madrid, 1891–1892), Portugal, Russia and South America (Buenos Aires, 1894; Valparaiso, Chile 1898) as well as in Italy. During this period of his career his performances were typical of those maintaining the ‘noble’ baritone repertoire, with fine vocal delivery and elegant acting. In 1898 he made his debuts at La Scala, Milan and the Teatro Costanzi, Rome as Hans Sachs / Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg – an unexpected role, as he sang little Wagner thereafter. He returned to La Scala during the following year to sing the title role in Falstaff and Nevers / Les Huguenots.
