Sophie Langdon

Sophie Langdon is one of Britain’s leading violinists. She has appeared as soloist with many major orchestras, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic and the Berlin Radio Orchestra.

Recognised as a violinist and musician of great versatility, Sophie Langdon is active in many different spheres: as chamber player, soloist and recitalist, orchestral leader and director, and teacher. She is Professor of Violin at the Royal Academy of Music. Scholarship study took her to the Royal Academy of Music, the Julliard School in New York and the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and in 1981 with the Trio Zingara she was a winner at the Munich International Competition. In addition to her demanding activities as a soloist, she also plays with various ensembles including Lontano, the London Sinfonietta and her own string quartet, Fourth Dimension. She guest leads for the English Chamber Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, London Mozart Players, Orchestra of St John’s Smith Square and the Academy of London. She also broadcasts frequently for the BBC. In May 1996 her CD recording of the Ethel Smyth Concerto for Violin and Horn with the Philharmonia (Chandos) was released to great critical acclaim, and more recently Mozart Piano and Oboe Quartets with the Ambache Chamber Ensemble (IMP), the Louise Farenc Nonet (Carlton Classics), and the Fourth Dimension String Quartet début CD of Goldmark on ASV.
